THE MISSION OF THE ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY (EPA)

Nature's way of protecting life on Planet Earth is being challenged daily by man-made materials that pollute and destroy our natural habitat. Ultraviolet radiation is extremely harmful at certain wavelenghts.

The Ozone Layer - a gaseous blanket in the stratosphere - is the natural filter of UV radiation, absorbing most of these rays before reaching the Earth's surface. However, this Ozone layer is rapidly being destroyed and as a result, more and more radiation is reaching the Earth and inevitably, your body.

THE RESULTS OF THIS OVEREXPOSURE TO YOUR BODY ARE:

  • Sunburn
  • Damage to DNA
  • Age spots
  • Wrinkling and sagging of skin
  • Premature ageing
  • Uneven pigmentation
  • Cataracts
  • Skin Cancer
  • Ultraviolet rays penetrate deepest into the skin by passing through the Epidermis - the skin's outer layer - and into the Dermis. Your body's natural protection to Ultraviolet radiation is contained in Melanin, the pigmentation of the skin. In the past, people with lighter coloured skin were thought to be at more risk, but scientific research has shown that everybody is at risk due to the increased levels of UV-A and UV-B radiation that bombard the Melanocytes (cells responsible for producing Melanin). This requires the cells to work at an abnormal rate and causes the resulting skin damage seen on most sun-bathers.

We all need to protect ourselves in the same way we would in extreme conditions of temperature. If you feel cold, you wear warmer clothing. Likely, if your skin is exposed on a daily basis to the Carcinogenic environment of the Sun's rays, then you need the protective blanket of Bucco's Moisture Locking technology.

Bucco Caribbean provides extra UV protection when used daily. It is designed to condition the skin while protecting it. It allows the body's natural moisture to be locked in, rather than adding moisterizing agents. The Moisture Locking ingredients work towards regulating and maintaining the moisture balance in your skin. The results are a Softer, Smoother, Healthier, Younger looking skin.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT YOUR SKIN:

If after 15 minutes of normal exposure to the sun, your skin begins to redden or becomes sensitive to the touch, this means that your Minimal Erythermal Dose (or MED) is 15 minutes. That is the minimum time your unprotected skin can be exposed to the sun before experiencing burn.

A product with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 15 should allow you to remain fifteen times as long in the sun to develop the same burn.

e.g. Minimal Erythermal Dose (MED) - 15 minutes
    Product with SPF 15 - 15 x 15 minutes
    = 3.75 hours

Skin Cancer, malignancy in the skin, and the most common of all cancers. There are three main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Basal cell carcinoma, the most common type, develops in the basal, or bottom, layer of the epidermis, the top layer of skin. Squamous cell carcinoma, the second most common type, develops in the upper layers of the epidermis. The American Cancer Society estimates that basal cell and squamous cell skin cancers account for more than 1 million new cases each year, but for only 1900 deaths.

The third type of skin cancer is melanoma. It develops in the melanocytes, or pigment cells, which are found throughout the basal layer. Melanoma is the most dangerous type of skin cancer and is responsible for about three-quarters of all skin cancer deaths. About 41,600 new cases of melanoma are diagnosed annually in the United States, and an estimated 7300 people die from this disease each year. The incidence of melanoma has been increasing faster in the United States than any other form of cancer, and a person born in the early 1990s is 12 times more likely to develop melanoma than a person born in the early 1940s.

    RISK FACTORS

Skin cancers can grow in any part of the skin, but approximately 90 percent develop in areas exposed to the sun, especially the face, neck, backs of the hands, and the scalps of bald men. Exposure to direct sunlight, especially during childhood, is the chief risk factor for skin cancer, and the greater the number of blistering sunburns a person has had, the greater the risk of developing skin cancer later in life. People with pale skin are at greatest risk for skin cancer, particularly if their skin burns or freckles easily, and the incidence rate of melanoma is more than 40 times higher among American whites than blacks.

    PREVENTIVE MEASURES

Sunlight that reaches the earth's surface contains two kinds of ultraviolet (UV) radiation. UV-A and UV-B both contribute to sunburn and skin cancer, as well as to conditions such as premature wrinkling of the skin. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has determined that depletion of the ozone layer in the upper atmosphere will continue to increase radiation damage to skin and skin cancer rates in the future.

The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends that people avoid the sun at its peak (from 10 am to 3 pm), seek shade, and cover up with clothing and a brimmed hat. It also recommends the regular use of sunscreen, which has been shown to prevent the development of precancerous keratoses (skin lesions that appear during middle age) and decrease the risk of skin cancer. Because skin cancer develops slowly over many years, it is important that protection from too much sun begin in childhood. Indoor tanning parlors should also be avoided, since they expose people to the same kinds of ultraviolet radiation as sunlight. Learning to identify early signs of skin cancer is crucial, as is periodic self-examination of the skin. Any skin changes or abnormalities should be reported to a physician.

The World Meteorological Organization observed a 45 percent depletion of the ozone layer over one-third of the northern hemisphere, from Greenland to western Siberia, for several days during the winter of 1995-1996. The deficiency was believed to have been caused by chlorine and bromine compounds combined with polar stratospheric clouds formed under unusually low temperatures.
